Barack Obama: New Campaign Theme Song

The Obama campaign has gone apoplectic in responding to the latest John McCain campaign ad, which suggests that Obama has more in common with other celebrities - Paris Hilton, Britney Spears - than with political candidates of substance.

Here's the clip.

Despite Obama's protestations, the guy really is a celebrity.

Why such deep denial? He has certainly embraced that status for political advantage. Witness his own involvement in the creation of his celebrity, dating back to his self-mythologizing autobiography.

Recent examples of Obama's embracing of his inner celebrity include posing for cover stories in People magazine and Rolling Stone (his second recent appearance on the RS cover). Odd, too, that just a few months ago, he complained about the news media's invasive fascination with his family, and then he decided to willingly allow People's photographers to provide maximum exposure of his family. This is what celebrities do.

Given his history of "revising" his opinions and then denying he ever held the original opinion, I wouldn't be surprised if he were to say something along the lines of, "I've always been opposed to the trappings of celebrity."

So, in honor of Obama's status as a celebrity, I propose a new theme song for his campaign.

Here it is (drum roll, please): Living Color's "Cult of Personality."

Lyrics (courtesy of Lyricsfreak.com):

Look into my eyes, what do you see?
Cult of personality
I know your anger, I know your dreams
I've been everything you want to be
I'm the cult of personality
Like Mussolini and Kennedy
I'm the cult of personality
Cult of personality
Cult of personality

Neon lights, a Nobel Prize
The mirror speaks, the reflection lies
You don't have to follow me
Only you can set me free
I sell the things you need to be
I'm the smiling face on your TV
I'm the cult of personality
I exploit you still you love me

I tell you one and one makes three
I'm the cult of personality
Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi
I'm the cult of personality
Cult of personality
Cult of personality

Neon lights a Nobel Prize
A leader speaks, that leader dies
You don't have to follow me
Only you can set you free

You gave me fortune
You gave me fame
You gave me power in your god's name
I'm every person you need to be
I'm the cult of personality
Look into my eyes, what do you see?
Cult of personality
I know your anger, I know your dreams
I've been everything you want to be
I'm the cult of personality
Like Mussolini and Kennedy
I'm the cult of personality
Cult of personality
Cult of personality

Neon lights, a Nobel Prize
The mirror speaks, the reflection lies
You don't have to follow me
Only you can set me free
I sell the things you need to be
I'm the smiling face on your t.v.
I'm the cult of personality
I exploit you still you love me

I tell you one and one makes three
I'm the cult of personality
Like Joseph Stalin and Gandhi
I'm the cult of personality
Cult of personality
Cult of personality

Neon lights a Nobel Prize
A leader speaks, that leader dies
You don't have to follow me
Only you can set you free

You gave me fortune
You gave me fame
You gave me power in your god's name
I'm every person you need to be
I'm the cult of personality
