I just received this great news about a fellow former student in USF's graduate creative writing program. I'll second the congrats -- Karen is a gifted writer, and more than deserving of the major fiction award and publication of her stories.
(below is from John Fleming, Creative Writing prof at USF and author of The Legend of the Barefoot Mailman: A Novel)
..
Great news from creative writing M.A. graduate and current Ph.D. student Karen Brown Gonzalez: her collection of short stories, Pins and Needles, has been selected as the 2006 winner of AWP’s Grace Paley Award for Short Fiction. The collection will be published by the University of Massachusetts Press.
You may recall that Karen also won an O.Henry prize for her short story “Unction” last year (the story appears in the current O.Henry anthology). Congratulate Karen when you see her! All of us who know her work from workshop and beyond will agree that the award and the book publication are much deserved and long overdue.
